Match No Opponents Venue Date Score Match No Opponents Venue Date Score
Thanks to Colin and Dave H for running the line yesterday. Definitely the worst job of all.
I write this first brief update with mixed feelings really, a mixture of pride and hope plus a sense of disappointment. Pride in the way you played, hope in that the performance bodes well for the forthcoming season and disappointment in not getting our just rewards in a match where we seemed to hit the bar as many times as Amy Winehouse on a day release from the alchy clinic.
The match started late after the ref was delayed for 30 minutes and the grass on the pitch was long but playable. The first half was very even, with UPR playing down the hill and the formation looked good and solid through from the back four throughout the team. It was hard fought with both keepers called into action but without too many actual saves to make. In the middle of defence Luke and Michael repelled the CR attacks with Joe and Tom looking strong and focused completing the defensive line up. After 25 minutes the opener, CR swung another long ball to their main threat who squared it across the 18 yard line to an unmarked midfielder and it was thumped into the net, nothing Danny could of done to of stopped it flashing into the net. UPR lifted their heads and pushed on for an equaliser and a movement down the left saw Jack released only for a highly dubious flag to be raised as Jack went through. Callum, who had an impressive game, then had a great run down the right from a lovely through ball by Luke, to see his cross elude everyone. At the other end a class last man tackle by Joe just before half time followed by the same from Luke moments later kept the score 0-1 at half time.
A slight reformation for the second half saw Marlie in the centre of defence, Sam H as the holding playing (Nick had already gone off injured) and Jack swap places with Tom. The game was still even and UPR were beginning to up the tempo in search of the equaliser when CR broke through and their forward met the ball perfectly only for his shot to be saved superbly by Dan, a fantastic save to keep UPR in the match. UPR still pressed and Aidan and Marlie were working hard in the middle but we just lacked the cutting edge to break through their defence. A final throw of the dice saw Joe into central defence, Callum to right back and Michael released up front. The game changed radically.
UPR took complete control and pushed on in droves. Firstly a fine ball over the top saw Michael power clear down the right only for his shot to thud into the bar. Minutes later a carbon copy of the same saw the ball again cannon back before Michael followed up and levelled with a heated taken overhead kick. UPR smelt blood and pushed on, Jack ran clear from a lovely pass though but couldn’t quite beat their keeper. Michael received a lovely ball from Luke, outpaced the defence again, only for his fierce shot to again come back off the bar.
With time running out and UPR looking set for a minimum very deserved point, if not all three, all the points were taken from their grasp. CR got a throw on our left, a huge throw was hurled in and met well by a header to give CR the lead and no time for UPR to pull it back.
A good game, no points but a very good performance and some food for food.
It was hard to pick a man of the match as I thought in reality everyone played well, with special mention I think to the defence who kept their shape and Dan who made a truly fantastic save when we were 1-1 down. The defence as a whole dealt well with a quick strong CR forward line well but his desire (I am sure he never a lost a 50/50 tackle all game), his talking to his mates and organising defence and will to stop them, a worthy MOTM this week went to Luke....
Match 2
For a change the ref was on time, the goals all set and
our new resident linesman ready (super stuff, thank you) and the Blues ready to
go, all it needed now was a quick start and for the boys to get their heads up
following last week’s defeat. The Blues took kick off, up the slope and with
barely seconds gone a quick release saw Michael put through to out strip the defence, steady himself and score the opener. Both teams
played open expansive football and both keepers were called upon to make good
saves and were both playing well. UPR’s defence
looked fast and the midfield were solid but the threat was there to see as
again the Rushingham number 6 got through only for Danny to make a great stop.
Gradually though UPR began to win more and more ball and dominate, Aidan and
Bryce moving the ball to Ellis and Jack P well, with Nick behind them picking
up a lot of the loose ball. Then with about 20 minutes gone Michael again out
powered the defence and he scored his and UPR’s
second goal. A solo goal of pace, determination and power.
UPR pushed for a third to try and kill the game off but instead the defence, who had done so well up until now, were breached and
a thumper flew in to make it 2-1. It gave Rushingham a sense of belief and
UPR’s confidence seemed to waiver slightly and with minutes to go again their
number 6 drove through down our right, rode Callums challenge and Luke brought
him down for a penalty, which was emphatically put away. After a competitive
first half where UPR had been the better side for long spells, again we saw
ourselves going in without a lead.
A quick talk to the boys to continue doing the same and believe in themselves,
to keep going and keep up the desire and this game was there and the boys were
ready for the second half.
It started edgy and even, Michael broke through only for
their keeper to save again with his legs. Down the other end Danny made a
fabulous stop to keep the score level after about 40 minutes. Then the
breakthrough the pressure deserved. Michael scored his third of the day
following a lovely ball from Bryce and the flood gates opened. Jake moved into
central midfield and played some beautiful balls to Ellis on the right and it
was fast, penetrative football. This was followed with a brace from Bryce and a
hat trick from Jack L who had come on as a second half substitute (not a bad
return at all!!!). All well taken, well deserved goals and I really believe
hopefully a glimpse of what we can and should be about. Desire,
attitude and fast flowing football.
The day belonged to the team, who had all to a player
contributed positively to this result - but it would be remiss of me not to
mention that one player should still take a highly merited individual mention
for one of the most effectual individual impacts I have seen in a match for a
long time. A double hat trick and a performance that scared
the opposition to the point of trying gamesmanship to stop him. This week’s
MOTM went to our skipper, Michael.
